Substrate is built on the principle that your notes are yours. Not stored on someone else's cloud, not mined for training data, not locked into a proprietary format.

Storage

Everything lives in a single SQLite database file. It is fast, portable, and backed by decades of reliable technology. You can back it up, copy it, or move it anywhere.

Export

Export your notes as Markdown files any time from the settings page. Each note becomes a .md file with its title, content, and metadata intact. Your wiki-links remain as links that other tools can understand.

Open source

Substrate is free and open source software. You can run it on your own server, modify it to suit your needs, or contribute improvements back to the project. No vendor lock-in, no subscription traps, no disappearing features.
