Writing notes
Every note in Substrate is written in Markdown — a simple, readable way to format text. You can add headings, lists, quotes, code blocks, and more without touching a toolbar.
To create a new note, click New note or press Cmd+K (Ctrl+K on Windows) to open the command palette. Give your note a title and start writing.
Daily notes
Substrate has a built-in daily notes feature. Each day gets its own note — perfect for journals, meeting logs, or thinking out loud. Use the calendar icon to jump to today's note or browse past entries.
Wiki-links
To link to another note, type the link trigger (two open brackets) followed by the note title. Substrate will suggest matching titles as you type. These are called wiki-links, and they are the connective tissue of your knowledge graph.
